In 1734 (the 12th year Emperor Yongzheng came to the throne), Lei Dasheng, the founder of the brand, opened a Chinese medicine store at the entrance of the Zhouwang Temple Lane in front of the Heaven Store inside the Chang Gate of Suzhou Town. He named the drugstore as the “Leisongfentang Chinese Medicine Store” by referring to “Songfentang”, Lei’s Family Hall title. Lei Dasheng himself sat in the drugstore offering medical advices and hang up a signboard of “Dr. Leiyunshang” as what he was styled. Hence the creation of the Leiyunshang brand.
In 1862, Shanghai Leiyunshang began to produce and market the Liushengwan, which is recognized as the earliest bactericidal anti-virus Chinese medicine ever created in the world, even 66 years earlier than Penicillin. It is also the smallest Chinese medicine pills, each of which used to weigh 2.9 mg and was uniformly stipulated to weigh 3.125 mg since November 1, 1998.
In 1979, 1984 and 1989, the Liushengwan have been awarded the national quality “golden medals” for three consecutive times.

The Story of the Fabricated Liushengwan Pills

One of Leiyunshang’s symbolic products, the Liushengwan are recognized as the “oriental magic drug” thanks to the magical efficacies. At that time, the Liushengwan were sold bearing a mark showing they were the product of Leiyunshang Songfentang without separately registered trademark. With so much popularity in the market, the Liushengwan would surely incur jealousy among those unscrupulous merchants in the industry and some of them attempted to replicate Liushengwan for profit.

In 1915 (the 4th year of the Republic of China), a merchant, who was known as Zhuang by surname, passed shoddy products off as the Liushengwan in the market. The consumers saw through the trick for apparent efficacy discrepancy between the genuine and fake products. The incident attracted great concern from Shanghai Leiyunshang Pharmaceutical and therefore the “Jiuzhitu” trademark was specifically designed for registration in protection of the legitimate rights of both the products and the drugstore. Since then the consumers may recognize the products bearing the Jiuzhitu trademark as the genuine Liushengwan, while the Liushengwan of the other inferior brands could hardly enjoy any popularity.

In 1924 (the 13th year of the Republic of China), Liushengwan were infringed again. There was a Japanese merchant, “Shi Du Ping Bing Wei” by name, privately reproduced Liushengwan for profit. He knew that Leisongfentang was actually the same entity of Shanghai Leiyunshang Drugstore and he chose to fabricate a trademark pattern, with the Chinese characters “Leiyunhao”as the focus, which was surrounded by the laces and decorated with“Leiyun” written in regulate script. The designed pattern was presented to the Trademark Bureau for registration. Unexpectedly, the Trademark Bureau was cheated in some way to handle the case and issued a “certificate” through approval, with the imitated trademark pattern published on the Trademark Bulletin.

At a glimpse, those who had discerning eyes could tell that the Chinese character patterns of both“Leiyunhao” and“Leiyun” were a sheer imitation of the “Leiyunshang” brand, except that the Chinese character “Shang” was deleted. Therefore, both the Shanghai General Chamber of Commerce and Suzhou General Chamber of Commerce expressed their indignant feelings and immediately notified Leiyunshang Drugstore to negotiate with the Trademark Bureau. However, the Trademark Bureau replied ambiguously and pointlessly by merely indicating that the trademarks published in the Trademark Bulletin had a valid period of 3 years, or in another word, such attempted imitation would be permitted for 3 years. How ridiculous! That Japanese merchant didn’t give up. Rather, he was prepared to apply the Ministry of Industry & Commerce of the Beijing Government for registration. The patriots in the then national Ministry of Industry & Commerce considered that the Chinese interests shouldn’t be infringed by a foreigner and they chose to telegraph Leiyunshang Drugstore reminding them to rush the registration. The Japanese merchant’s attempt failed eventually and Leiyunshang’s legitimate rights got protected.

In 1958, the Company’s predecessor was the ginseng and pilose antler wholesaling section of Shanghai Medicinal Materials Company.
In August 1981, the ginseng and pilose antler business department of Shanghai Medicinal Materials Company was founded and is now known as the Shenxiang Ginseng and Pilose Antler Branch Company of Shanghai Medicinal Materials Company.
In February 1989, the registered trademark “SX” for Shenxiang was approved by the State Industrial & Commercial Administration. Starting from 1995, Shenxiang has won consecutively the title of the renowned product of Shanghai City.
In April 1997, the both Shenxiang trademarks (the elephant image and the exclusive character style) were registered subject to the approval by the State Industrial & Commercial Administration.
Since 1999, the Shenxiang trademark has been approved to be a renowned trademark in Shanghai for consecutive years.
On April 27, 2012, the Shenxiang trademark was approved by the State Industrial & Commercial Administration to be a renowned trademark of China.

In 1994, the fabricated Shenxiang brand ginseng and pilose antler of inferior quality began to emerge in the market and filled up the major as well as minor healthcare products markets in Shanghai almost overnight. The flourishing ginseng and pilose antler trade was severely shocked by the extensive dealings of fabricated products. The brand image of Shenxiang as painstakingly fostered in the past years was destroyed. After evaluating the situations, Shenxiang decided to fight back. Hence a life-or-death brand-protecting warfare was unveiled.

By arranging the renowned doctors to deliver medical advices in the hall and launching the protecting campaigns to safeguard consumers’ legitimate rights on March 15 etc., Shenxiang has been endeavoring to help the consumers recognize the genuine ginseng and pilose antlers and to have such knowledge published through the mass medias such as radio broadcasting stations and newspapers etc. Meanwhile, Shenxiang also takes the initiatives to participate in and support the establishment of the Anti-Fabrication and Right-Safeguarding Association of Shanghai and has set up its exclusive sales cabinets at the distinct places in the health-promotional product markets. Thanks to all these efforts taken effectively by Shenxiang, the furious fabricating attempts have been gradually curbed and the Shenxiang brand has been enjoying increasing popularity among the consumers, which in turn helps to attach the utmost importance to the product quality and march forward along the road of brand-oriented development.
